Stanley accidentally bumps The Lump in the wreck room and is left to defend himself. However X Ray comes to his defence and saves Stanley from getting pounded. Why would X Ray do this? I think the reason X ray saved Stanley to represent someone, I'm thinking past. Maybe when X ray came to Camp Greenlake he almost got into a fight but someone came to save him and that's why X ray saved Stanley. To continue someone's legacy. He made Stanley a somebody because perhaps the same guy he is trying to be like made him a somebody to. I also think x ray defended him because they were there for the same reasons, they both were caught doing a crime they didn't actually do OR x ray could have been the one to drop those snickers "from the sky" and that's why he gave Stanley that look of anger probably beating himself up that he got a kid that didn't deserve to be there and maybe that's why he saved him! Because he knows that it was his fault for stealing them then dropping them so that's his way of being even with Stanley and I think Stanley will find out soon that x ray is the reason he is there. The predictions are endless but I think X Ray is the reason Stanley is there.

DeleteI consider it because sometimes often with siblings they will get in trouble for one another like or they'll make up stories to protect the one getting in trouble to make it look like they were doing good. I can't name a personal experience but I can imagine one, like let's say that one day 2 brothers doing laundry and one leaves to go check something and the other takes initiative to try and do it when that isn't his job and he messes up putting bleach in the colors ill say and the other comes down and stops it and then the mom comes home and she's yelling at the one who put bleach but the other one steps in and says he was only trying to help, at least he put an effort and won't mess up again. That could be an example that can relate to The Lump, x-ray and Caveman. X-ray the sentimental type? Maybe but I think his story will relate to Stanley's and that's why he is helping him out.

First of all i think he did it to maintain his leadership name but i also think he did it for the name . In life if you have a name you often get more than you give like nina ( Miss . America ) .

Just like Nina , X-rays name of being the leader is giving him something ! Maybe its the attention , or maybe its a help line when needed . But he's getting more than he gives . Hes maintaining a name that gives him something .
@deandre I agree with your theory, even I would say that maybe X-Ray decided to treat Stanley in a good way because he has been through the same situation. The boys there may have done crimes but that does not mean they don't have a heart, maybe X-Ray really does feel pity for Stanley.
DeleteA reason that X-ray stood up for Stanley, now know as caveman, is that that X-ray might be using using the Caveman a.k.a. Stanley to his own advantage. He could be giving Stanley a reputation by giving him a nickname since at camp green lake, you get some respect with a nickname. But if he says things such as "he's one tough dude" and " you don't want to mess with the caveman" there giving him a fierce name to the other tents ( Tent A,B and C) they probably will not mess with anyone from that tent, knowing that Stanley obviously has some serious weight on them. Also, by giving him a nickname, that would indicate that they had accepted him as one of there own. so if you mess with him, the tent will mess you up, if you mess with the tent, then Stanley will mess with you.
ReplyDeleteAnother reason that X-ray could have saved Stanley from a beating is that he probably would have liked everyone from there tent in the best condition, X-ray obviously the leader of camp D when "mom" is not around ( since he has that natural authority) and on top of this, he could later on call in a favour from Stanley, such a dig part of my hole or give me some of your water, ( but this doesn't actually happen if you watched the movie.) X-ray would have given Stanley the nickname Caveman as if he has accepted him into the group of camp D. most likely not anyway's.

Deletewell a certain benefit that they would achieve is that no one would possible consider to mess around with tent D mostly because of the way they had talked about Stanley, and obviously, Stanley a.k.a Caveman has a lot of weight on everyone so it would be sort of hard to fight him, and the rest of Camp D on there side. this would make Tent D look seriously tough, having one guy as powerful as half the tent, and then the rest of the tent to top it off. so all in all, the benefit is probably fear, fear of tent D

Another reason is maybe X Ray now friends with Stanley and doesn't want his friend to get hurt. I think this because maybe since Stanley was new at Camp Green Lake he doesn't know who everybody is and how they react to different situations. And since Stanley accidentally bumps into The Lump all the other guys at Camp Green Lake calls Stanley by the nickname Caveman.Since Stanley bumped into him the other campers may think that Stanley wants to pick up a fight with The Lump. So since X Ray maybe wanted to help and save his friend he didn't want Stanley to get in trouble either.

An since X-Ray is here, that means he has certainly did something wrong, or he has been on the wrong place at the wrong time like Stanley. X-Ray didn't act this friendly before, and this defence fact just makes a doubt stand up, that he wants something in return. Now I don't know what that may be, but it sure can be anything. And accepting the fact that X-Ray is the leader of their tent, Stanley might be forced to give something in return, to be a part of them.
An other reason I think that X-Ray might have helped Stanley, was to keep up the reputation of their tenet being the strongest. Since X-Ray doesn't know Stanley so much, or at all, he still can see the tough Stanley that stood up to actually speak against the caveman after being so exhausted. And still X-Ray might have done it for his own good. This is just a prediction, while the truth can be absolutely different.

My prediction would probably be yes, maybe. As far as we have read the book, everyone listens to what x ray says and follows him. I guess everyone was once new to this camp, and wanted to be friends with X-ray since he had the reputation, and who knows he may ask something big in return!

I don't really think it mattered to him if he had a friend or not, he is the leader after all. the only real world example I could think about is using something with what they know, when some knows something and it is beneficial for others they will most likely sway the person by doing something they cant do. Stanley could write perhaps X-ray can't and wants Stanley's assistance it doesn't necessarily have to be something you can't do it can also be doing something that will make the other persons life easier.

As the leader, he probably would not want to come off as some rude irrelevant boy. He would rather want to seem nicer rather mean or strange. Stanley had already told the boys in his tent that he had got here in the first place by a misunderstanding and that the real bully wasn't him. I don't think that X-Ray would really think Stanley is a tough guy and neither is X-Ray a sympathetic person.

I would think that lending someone a hand does deserve a hand back to the person who helped you. It wouldn't be very nice if someone helped you and you don't give back...it shows that you don't really apreciate what something someone has done for you.
ReplyDeleteIn connection to this book, there have been many times where I have helped a person and thought that they could give me something back in return for what I did to help them. One day, I had helped this little girl in grade one or two tie her shoe laces. She said thank you and gave me a hug. I felt happy for what I did because I gave a little someone a hand and they gave me a little hug in return.

My reasoning for this is because since Stanley is new to Camp Green Lake and it has only been his first or second day, he doesn't really have anything to give or offer X Ray.If he did give something back... the least he can offer i guess it would be a day off. But in order for him to have one, the campers, Stanley and X Ray would have to try really hard to convince the councilors or even the warden to let X Ray have a day off of digging. And so, I think it is not necessary for Stanley to give something in return to X Ray even though he is the leader.

X-Ray over all I find pretty interesting. I mean from reading a TV guide from ages ago, to watching a broken TV till the stunt he pulled. I really cannot agree with one specific reason to why X-Ray would do this. I mean, the puzzle pieces don't fit.
So I just concluded to my top 3.
A.
He plays the leader role. As the person sitting on the throne, he cannot afford to let his people (Tent D) get/cause any trouble. Especially the new guy. You might be thinking, then why did he scratch up EZ. Well he is the King of Camp D. He is aloud to take that role. I mean compare him to the rest of camp D members, Stanley the newbie. Zero the one whom does not speak, Armpit the selfish one (taking the "shortest" shovel and making sure its his), and Squid seems to just be immature. When your in competition like that, it is easy to see who the most "noble" one there is. So that would make sense. So as he did that "act" he was playing his kingly role as well. And reading through the chapter of the introduction, it really would just make sense if he did play the leader role. Introducing everyone and stuff. He ever gave that strong credits as he said "You don't want to mess with the Caveman". It clearly seems like X-Ray most definitely has a liking for Stanley.
B
It has only been Stanley's first day. He would not know much. X-Ray may just try to send that "don't mess with me nor him signal". He just wants to come off tough. Though he probably is as he is in a juvenile camp You just may never know, maybe he got into here like Stanley. By accident. So by doing that he might want to show case of brave and tough he is and what not. Maybe not to the rest of the guys, but maybe Stanley at least. He may just want to come off appealing,
He might just also want that "Mr.Nice-Guy" reputation. But later on he might just go against Stanley, Just like a fish and a worm. The fish eats the worm no problem, but gets pulled out when he/its needed. Lets be real, it is Stanley's first day. Stanley does not know what majority of these peoples crime. He would be very vulnerable. X-Ray, well he exceeded what Stanley is looking for. A "friend".
C.
A reason if the book was non-fiction I would totally find stupid. But maybe Camp Green Lake made X-Ray that better person they "work so hard" to make him to be. It made him nicer, kinder & friendlier. It may have affected X-Ray by a lot. It has not mentioned yet far how long X-Ray was at this camp. But I am assuming by his leadership role, he has been there a while. Who knows, maybe digging those holes really did put a affect on him, You never know. But I personally do find this to be the most unlikely of them all. But it also is the most reasonable.
But after writing this all, I think A is the most sensible one. He wants and owns that Leadership.
Don't you think he is risking his own leadership by boosting Stanley's reputation and calling him a "Caveman" and saying "Caveman is one though dude" because now everyone thinks he is though he is smart and mature so don't you think he can take over X ray's spot of being the leader. Don't you think he wants so etching from Stanley.
DeleteI don t think you could really say he's risking his leadership. It's almost like it's his job to give the people in his camp that kind of boost. I don't really think they'd "risk" a fake criminal rookie to take place in the throne.
DeleteI think that x-Ray came to Stanley's defence because I think that since Stanley had told the boys in d tent that he was sent to camp green lake because he had stolen Clyde livingstons shoes, x-Ray would have thought that it was cool and wanted to make Stanley a special member of the group and wanted to know more about Stanley and his connection with Clyde Livingston. Maybe x-Ray was a big fan of Clyde Livingston and wanted to know more about him, since need knew Stanley had met him in court and had seen his old sneakers, and in order to get that information out of Stanley, he decided he should become close friends with him.
ReplyDeleteA real world connection to this would be let's just say that there is a new kid in class and you find out that they are from L.A and they had met some of the biggest stars in Hollywood. If you wanted to know, would you not try to make friends with them? And in order to be their friend would you let anybody else pick on them? Would you not come to their defence? Would you not make them feel special by giving them a nickname or try to make them fit In by including them in your group and etc...? Well, maybe that is exactly what x-ray may be trying to do...
Another reason I think that x-Ray came to Stanley's defence is because maybe he somehow knows that what Stanley was accused for is not true, maybe he thinks that a kid like Stanley is too innocent to commit such a big crime, or maybe he KNOWS that it was not Stanley that committed the crime he was accused of or HE was the one who had dropped the shoes from the highway and he felt bad that Stanley was paying for a mistake he had committed, so in order to say sorry, x-ray probably wanted to make Stanley a special member of the group and since x-Ray was sort of like the leader in the group he had the power to do that and the other boys wouldn't disagree with him.
A real world connection I have to this is that one time, my family had a little family reunion one summer, and we invited all our cousins and everybody over, there 2 of my cousins were playing near the china display, as they were playing, one cousin knocked one of the plates off the shelf, after knocking it, the cousin ran away, just as another cousin came to see something was broken, just then my mom came in and saw the the other cousin was standing near the broken china, even though he hadn't been punished, she had assumed it was him who had broken it since he was near it, the cousin who had actually knocked it felt bad that someone who hadn't done it had been blamed for it, so for the rest of the reunion, he was really nice to the other cousin and gave him Whatever he wanted as a way of saying sorry. So, just like that maybe x-Ray wanted to say sorry by making Stanley feel special.
Another reason i think that x-ray defended Stanley is because he wanted to use Stanley to his own advantage later, he knew that Stanley was a guy with a lot of weight and yet Stanley was as innocent as a flower, x-Ray knew that if he asked Stanley to dig a hole for him in the future, he would not refuse, so maybe x-Ray would pretend to be nice to him now and then take advantage of Stanley.
A real life connection I have to this is that I have seen people in my old school take advantage of new people because they are smart or artistic, or athletic. At first they are very nice to them in the beginning and then, when they need them, they take advantage of them and the person can't say no.

In this world people are going to do things for them self .this world is extremely competitive . If we all wanted the same job we would have to help our selves , and find a way to do that . Soon we will realize that in reality we're going to have to do things to help our selves out . Wether is getting a help line for later .
But this world is not as nice as it seems . Maybe in books but sometimes that's a different reality . This world is full of people who want the same things , this world is full of people who will do anything to help them selves . The world isn't as nice as it seems .
know he did this to benifits him, he is being selfish but those are come characteristics he need to be a leader. No one helps a new kid right away when he gets into a fight. Zero was only trying to establish Stanley's trust.

Maybe when he was new to Camp Green Lake, he might have been bullied and treated like that himself at one point. He may have not wanted Stanley to suffer like he did, especially because it was his first day, and so he went and saved Stanley.

The regular attending student may want the new person to not feel left out; they may want that person to feel like they are a part of the school. And if that new student got bullied or hurt by someone else, the old student may help out the new person because they may have experienced that feeling or may have been in a similar situation. They might not want the new person to go through what they went through and so the old student would help out the new student. They know how it feels like to be in the new student’s shoes, which may be a horrible feeling, and so they help out the new student.
In addition to that, maybe X-Ray is kind enough to care about the other campers at Camp Green Lake. He may want everyone to be safe and friendly, and so he was on the side of Stanley, helping him and trying to discontinue the fight.
Eg. Continuing the other example of a new student, maybe an old student would help out a new student even if they have not experienced being a new student themselves. They may just want everyone to be treated the way they want to be treated, and so they would help out the new student, if that new student is having troubles.
Another reason is that X-Ray doesn't want his friends to be treated like that. X-Ray could have thought of Stanley as a friend, after meeting him, so he helped him out. Friends help out friends.
Eg. This situation happens everywhere. Whenever there is a person in need, their friend always helps them out. If someone is scared, bullied, hurt, uncomfortable, and not feeling happy or as themselves, their friend is there to help them out. Their friend is on their side, supporting them.

But if you were reading this book for the first time you would think that X Ray is helping Stanley out of the kindness of his heart. You might think that he's doing this for a name of being a leader, but you can not think that he is gaining something out of it. Did you think the same way when you first read the book? When reading chapter 9 for the first time, while reading the scene where X Ray helped out Stanley, did a thought just occur in your head saying that X Ray is helping Stanley for having the name of a leader, and for the fact that he will gain something later? I agree with Rochelle and Tamana. If x ray actually wanted to be friends with Stanley, why wouldn't he have done it before? Why at the end of the day, by saving him from the caveman all of a sudden? As I said before this is a competitive world ! If you could gain something that you want chances are your going to do it ! If you had a chance to gain something and it was that easy you could do it !
It would be really nice to say x-Ray had helped Stanley from the kindness of his heart but this is life and not everyone is going to do something from the kindness of there heart . Not everyone is going to be nice to you because they want to be friendly

DeleteX Ray has tried to be friends with Stanley before. It was just Stanley's first day at Camp Green Lake. They didn't really have time to meet each other. When they did meet, they just introduced their names, but they didn't really get free time to really get to know each other.
But after being at green camp lake, the best time is the rest time. Why would x Ray take his rest time to be friend with Stanley? And does Stanley really need another friend, since he already has a whole group with him? So let's think.... Can there be another reason behind x ray being his so called friend!

Just like in sports a leader or your team mates should never allow someone from the other team to make fun of you . Also a leader on a sports team should try to make you surpassingly better and boost you up wether its constructive criticism or a pat on the back they should at least try to make you better and not only you but the team.
Since X-ray is the leader I think he had taken the initiative to give Stanley a nick name . If a new team mate was to come on your team whether its soccer,baseball, basketball , etc. Wouldn't you think the captain would try and make you feel welcome or like you fit in . Because being 13-15 year old I think most of us could say we want to fit in or to feel like we do . As I said before a leader or your team mate should never allow the team to make fun of someone on your team .
X-Ray seems to be leader from the initiative to give nick names and make stanley feel welcome although he barley knows him , and not allowing someone not in his group to start something with someone in his group . X-Ray also seems to have others back with in the group.
I think we could all say X-ray is hands down a leader . But in a way it seems like X-ray needs to be the leader . I feel because he helped Stanley , Stanley sort of owes X-Ray one .

This situation almost makes me see X-Ray like a attention needer . He needs to be the one to bring peace , almost like everyone's guru . . He has to be the leader , He has to be the peace maker . Its just a way this situation has made him look in my eyes .
Because on a sports team or everyday in real life if you just met someone and they were about to possibly be pounded you wouldn't help them whether they were a class mate , stranger , or even in you were the leader or captain ! There's a chance he could be helping him because he is a leader the idea does make sense because look at the fifa games for an example ; When two team mates choral and they are on opposite teams there is usually a player who steps in and trys to resolve things that could be X-Ray .
But heres the catch the difference between the Fifa teams and stanley and X-ray is that the teams for Fifa have trained together or a relatively long period of time , stanley and x-Ray just met .
This makes me start to wonder Is X-Ray doing this because he is a leader ? because stanley will be a help line ? Or maybe because he likes the attention . In a way it seems X-ray takes more than he gives
You give the nick name , and you give the boost , but later on in the book or in the future what will Stanley give to you ? I mean you can be the leader and get the name . But what can you get because the name ?
For an example Nina Davuluri got the name Miiss. America and she got a lot with the name , she did get hate but she also got paid to be on the cover of magazines , she got the bragging rights , she got interviews and a whole lot of publicity ! To me this is like what X-Ray is doing he is working for the name ( being a leader , helping stanley )like nina worked for her name , and just like Nina getting the name gets you a lot of credit . Nina did and i think thats why X-Ray helped stanley.
He needs to maintain the name to get the credit . He gets more than he gives ....................
Overall I think X-ray is maintaining his name because hes getting more than he gives , he knows like miss.america there is so much more than having a name because with that name comes a lot of things .

There are multiple reasons for Rex (x-ray) to have helped Stanley, most likely they were selfish reasons, I know this because, no one would help a newcomer, Stanley was only there for 30 hours of so. If a new student was to come through that door, and the next day if that kid were to get into a fight the next day, I can undoubtedly say that none of us will help him. This proves, that saving Stanley from the lump would benefit his prior needs.
Trust, Rex wants to gain Stanley’s trust, supposedly Rex is the leader of tent D. he has been here the longest, he kind of runs tent D. he gets the shortest shovel, and everybody listens to him. He wants to gain Stanley’s trust so Stanley thinks that Rex has his back, cause of that he will be Rex’s pet. Since Rex is more superior then Stanley, and has a lot of kids, under his control, no one want to mess with him. Stanley wants that protection, and Rex wants to have Stanley under his control. So Rex gained his trust and in Stanley’s mind he has to please Rex.
I know that whenever a camper finds a valuable thing in their hole, they need to report it to the warden, and get the day off. If Stanley does find anything, he will give it to rex. He would say” why should you have a day off when you just got here, while I was here for 8 months” Stanley is in Rex’s debt for saving him, from the lump. Rex could have done this, to get things off of Stanley.
An example is food, whenever someone does ask us for some, we do give it. But you do it so they can owe you back. Then when they have food we ask them, and we also remind them that we gave them some last time and have no choice but to give you some.
A bigger scale is banks, when you take money for a loan or mortgage, they still benefit through interest. X-ray is the bank, Stanley just took loan, and has to pay him back by doing things for him. X-ray could have done this to put Stanley in his debt.
This could be about reputation, since he is the leader, of camp D he wants to show

Rajveer, I disagree with you. If you consider X-Ray a leader (as I do) I'm pretty sure the last thing X-Ray would do is play that "you owe me" rule. Especially if you call him the leader. He has the noble spot. I just really think he wouldn't do that if he's actually at such a position. It seems at Camp Green Lake they have their dos and dont's, and based on their other rules, I feel like they care about each other's bond.

ReplyDeleteThere would be many reasons why X Ray saved Stanley from fighting The Lump but one reason why I would say is because X Ray wanted to the build trust towards Stanley so Stanley would trust him and would become one of his friends. The reason I think X Ray would do this is because Stanley was new there and Stanley barely talked to anyone and he didn’t share much about himself unless you would ask him a question. So I think X Ray’s plan was to find a golden opportunity to save Stanley which would impress Stanley since he saved him so they would become more close as friends. A real world example that I would use to support my point would be that even though it would rarely happen in the real world it does. For example, I’ll take school for an example, if a new kid or not even a new kid just any kid at your school that you don’t talk to but you want to get to know them more you would probably try to help them or if you find an opportunity you would try to impress them so they think you actually care about them and they would start to talk to you more. Most likely this idea always works so that’s why it could probably be a reason X Ray would use this strategy. Also now that I think of it since the beginning of the book X Ray has been very welcoming since Stanley has arrived. He has always been chit chatting with Stanley and has been trying to make Stanley feel welcomed at Camp Green Lake. …..Continued

This could be because he understood that Stanley is a newbie and he isn't well aware of the type of people and his surroundings.Every camper has been through the beginning stages and it would definitely be full of struggles. Maybe a reason could be that when X-ray was a new comer to camp green lake, there wasn't anyone to stand up for him so he knows how it feels to be left dumbfounded and lost.
ReplyDeleteXray is the leader of the D Tent. That would be my best reasoning guess. If X-ray is the leader and every camper in his tent follows his orders, it would be his duty and position to defend and protect his team members from outsiders and other kids from different tents.. Stanley and X-ray don't know each other as of yet. But that's what he was trying to do. He was letting Stanley know that he is part of the D Tent, it was almost like he was introducing himself to Stanley. X-ray was also keeping his reputation and I think that this was exactly what X-ray was looking for. He needed that extra scene where he could save someone and receive that extra umph of glory and respect for his holding position as leader of D Tent.
X-ray might be small and he might not see well, but he is leader for a reason. If he takes care of the boys and his team properly, he's leader. He protected Stanley because he is a part of their tent now. All leaders want to be on the top, they always want their team to stand out and shine on top of others. He is making Stanley a somebody in front of everybody. He wants everyone in the wreck room to be aware that his tent isn't some ordinary tent. It is a tent full of somebodies with nicknames and characters.
Leaders speak their truth, lead from the heart, they are courageous, they build teams, they care for themselves, they plan, and they leave a legacy. X-ray stood up and protected Stanley because he is the leader and that is what he is supposed to do.
Here is an example. Think about sports. The leaders of a sports team never allow their team mates to get beaten verbally by words or physically by actions. A sports team leader is always looking after the team and doing what is best for them whether it is for new opportunities, protection, or planning. X-ray saved Stanley not only for his glory and self, but to protect and keep his team together, so others don't think that there is a new poor "fat kid" in Tend D who has no purpose or character in the team.
For the reason that Stanley and X-ray don't know each other quite well.. maybe he is just trying to gain his trust and friendship! I mean, Stanley is a new comer so he doesn't know anyone well enough to give him his full trust and friendship. I don't think that X-ray is a bad guy. I think that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Maybe he's doing all this because he knows that being the leader, all obedience is towards him. If all campers in tend D obey him, it's going to turn out as getting rewarded. X-ray is the leader. Leaders have the duty to protect their pack, just like wolves. But the pack always stays together and when all wolves are obedient to their leader, they also pay him back with all protection, some even loosing their lives for their leader. If anyone knows the long hot summer and sunbeam days, it's him. He's doing good so he will see good himself by the people he has helped. ReplyDeleteThe first day that Stanley came to the camp and was introduced to the members in his tent, his counselor, was depending on Theodore (Armpit) to help Stanley out. The first question Stanley asked "Armpit" was "Do you know where I can fill my canteen?" and after the raging reply, I believe it was the last question he asked him to this point. After that, Stanley didn't start conversations with Armpit, but he did talk with X-Ray.
ReplyDeleteBy the time that the accident occurred with the lump, Stanley knew better than to tell X-Ray he was wrong. That meant that X-Ray had already made an impression on Stanley. In the last chapter, X-Ray had just helped Stanley out of a possible fight but no one's actually sure why he would do that. I think that X-Ray wants to be the one person that is the leader in Stanley's eyes and he wants to make sure that in any situation, he would get support by Stanley.
According to the survival guide, X-Ray was "one weird dude" and some people thought that he was an alien. One day he was found in the Wreck room staring at the blank, broken TV screen as if he was actually watching a show. Everyone at Camp Green Lake was allowed to have one item that would keep them close to home and that one thing for X-Ray was the TV guide for the week of March 22, 1998 - he would know exactly which show would come on at which time and what it would be about, but just for that week.
That day, someone else came in and sat right down beside X-Ray while he was watching even though everyone knew not to disturb X-Ray when he was "watching TV". Not only did that person sit down beside him, he slapped X-Ray on the back while he was laughing out loud as if some joke had just come on. Then, he got up and changed the channel. Already upset from the slap, X-Ray got up and switched the channels back. Alternately, they'd both switch channels with saying whether they'd watched that show or not. X-Ray was outraged and put his hand right on the other kid’s and squeezed it so hard that all 13 numbers were imprinted on the boy’s hand. In situations like that, everyone knows that the only answer you will give when someone asks what happened, is not that you got into a fight, it will be that you hit yourself with the tent door so the only people that will decide the solution are the other kids.
X-Ray is kind of the “main person” in tent D and I guess if he ends up in situations like these, he would like backups. Right after the time that X-Ray had rescued Stanley from the possible fight with the Lump, with the tiny conversation that Stanley and X-Ray had, he asked Stanley, “I bet you always wanted t dig a big hole, right? Am I right?” That seemed to be an unusual question since I personally don’t think anyone ever really wants to dig up a hole and I just think that right after the rescue, X-Ray simply wanted to see whether or not Stanley is part of his “group” and if he goes with whatever he says.
In the real world, there is far too much competition and I don’t think that X-Ray is the type of person that would feel sympathetic for the new, overweight kid at camp. I think that all X-Ray wants is to make an impression and it was said by Diablo Cody that “You make a first impression and people never forget it”. That is what X-Ray did and what he did will later on, only help himself.

-Why would someone want to save some they are not friends with? Maybe because of X-ray wants Stanley wants to do something that he can't do himself like stealing something from whoever. X-ray might use Stanley for that. X-ray won’t take the blame of stealing something. He would get someone else to steal for him. That person might be Stanley. X-ray will remind Stanley at some point that he saved him from getting pounded. In returns X-ray would like some thing back from Stanley.

There can be many reasons why X-Ray had defended Stanley. But I think that it is one of these two options: he knew the consequences the Stanley could get in, because he had already experienced it. Or he just wants to win his trust, so that later on he could take advantage of him. Though the first one does sound a bit more convincing. I would say that I agree with the second one more. In Chapter 7, Page 27, Paragraph 2-3, the author is telling us that, " The shovels were kept in a shed near the showers. They all looked the same to same to Stanley, although X-Ray had his own special shovel, which no one else was allowed to use. X-Ray claimed it was shorter than the others, but if it was, it was only by a fraction of an inch. The shovels were five feet long, from the tip of the steel blade to the end of the wooden shaft. Stanley's hole would have to be as deep as his shovel, and he'd have to be able to lay the shovel flat across the bottom in any direction. That was why X-Ray wanted the shortest shovel." Which basically means that everything that X-Ray does, has a reason behind it. Which is why I think that X-Ray is defending Stanley, so when the right time comes, he can use Stanley.

Because he might be thinking that if he gains the trust of someone but then when the time comes, when he wants to use that person, but that person is not in green lake, or not his friend, or does not believe him. He could use the others.

DeleteFor example when Stanley had started to dig his first hole X Ray told him to pick another hole so he spent have to complete his whole but he would get a finished one for free. X Ray was being very generous so Stanley won't have to stay in the hottest part of the day to dig his hole because everyone else had finished. I think X Ray was being too generous I think his intentions are something else.
ReplyDeleteAnother reason why I think X Ray helped him out was and was trying to become very close to him was because he wants something from him but isn't actually saying it. He is thinking for the things like if he finds anything in his hole he would give it to X Ray because he is his really close friend even though he is using Stanley and Stanley would even realize. That would be my second inference but possibly it could be anyone of them.
I think that maybe since Stanley is new and does not really know what's coming ahead of him , X ray decided he would like to help him out because maybe he also got into a fight with him when he was new and he had know idea what he could have done so he though that Stanley shouldn't deserve this know one should so he let him know by backing up for him.

Friends usually don't use one another; they are equal amongst themselves. Do you think that the friendship is only there in Stanley's eyes and for x-Ray it's only just a way to get out of things?
DeleteI think that X ray protected Stanley because he wanted to get out of camp green lake. The reason I think this is because since he was told that camp green lake was meant to change the behaviour of kids and turn bad boys into good boys he may have thought that if he pretended to be nice to others people may talk about how x ray is nice and he may try to convince the warden to release him because he changed his behaviour.
ReplyDeleteI think this because this is normal for a child to do. The reason I gave this statement is because usually I do try to pretend nice when I get in trouble at home to make me look innocent and try to make my parents forget about my punishment or talk it out and just tell me not to do it again. For example once I got in big trouble and my parents took away all my devices so I tried to act like I changed and after a while they talked about how I should not do it again and gave the devices back. Maybe X Ray was trying to do convince the warden that he had changed like I had convinced my parents that I had changed.
Although this is just a prediction because if X ray was smart he would understand that this is not detention or any small thing, it's a substitute for juvenile detention which is prison. He should understand that in prison nobody cares about whether you have changed or not they just care if you have stayed in prison for the amount of time you were told to, they can't do anything to help you even if you have changed. If you have changed that helps you and you are the only one that it benifits and not anybody else.
Another reason he may have been nice to Stanley is because he may understand how it is to be new to a certain place since he may have been new to camp green lake at one point and did not know what to do so he may feel bad for Stanley and may feel bad for Stanley. I know this because we have had many new people In our class and some people are mean to them because they don't know what to do so I sometimes stand up for them, because at one point I was new to this school and felt the same way they did and did not know what to do, although people helped me out so it felt very wrong not to help him out and that's why X-ray might have helped stanley
X Ray May have also helped Stanley because he wants to take advantage of Stanley by making him do whatever he wants him to do and to make Stanley obey his commands he can bring back the event where he helped Stanley everytime he wants Stanley to do something. For example some of my friends give me candy and then after along time I have something good for lunch they will usually say I gave you gum last time remember and they will convince you to give whatever you have. Then after a few days I had a good lunch again and they brought back that time when they gave me the gum.

DeleteI think that Rochelle, tamana, mannat, khushi and shrusti are all very dominating bloggers. The one blogger I would like to nominate is Rochelle. Her responses are very precise and perfect. She write in paragraphs and uses professional and a high level of vocabulary, occasionally she also adds quotes and make references in her text. She writes in paragraphs and her work is always very organized. She doesn't just put down any point that comes to mind, she has valid and unique points. Her work shows that she takes her time to do her work perfectly and doesn't rush.
DeleteI would nominate Rochelle for Top blogger mostly because she really has been all over the blog, commenting and probably attempting to have conversation with everyone. That is just some where it was small but to the point, then it came the large in depth answers and responses that made sence, and to the point, she even used examples, but she wouldn't just use them for one sentence, you use for sentence at a time and even paragraphs too. Beside her reply's to people, her answer was great, used a single example sever times to connect with the real world, she had 11 paragraphs, sure some small but to the point simple easy to understand, and great use of examples.

DeleteI think that the dominating bloggers are Rochelle, Tammana, And gitie because they are the bloggers that consistently post in each and every blog and do not give small answers and replies and instead give large detailed answers which have paragraphs for each different idea. They don't just reply some peoples comment but they comment in everybody ideas and they also use a lot of researched information to add to their knowledge about their comments. They also give a lot of details when commenting on peoples ideas and when defending their own thoughts. They also use very high end vocabulary which a lot of people including me don't use. For example rochelle consistently gets information from the internet and researches for more information for almost every post . She adds a lot of details to defend her ideas which makes it really hard to counter most of her ideas. She also uses many examples and does not give her ideas in general matter and talks about all her ideas specifically using examples

As N example she includes miss America on how she gains fortune, and also how Germany is now known by them winning the World Cup 2014, just by name comes the reputation. She blogs in many paragraphs and always connects to text to world in her statements. She takes her time to write in details, and has great grammar. She includes background knowledge and quotes to make her statement more strong and supportive. I would say that Rochelle's dedication towards blogging is absolutely great!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DeleteIn my opinion, I think that Rochelle is the top blogger because all her posts are backed up with support and she doesn't let her thoughts be influenced by other people's posts when she makes a stand. There are times where she may have to change her opinion and agree with another blogger but she knows what she wants to say and makes her posts organized, and clear. Even though many of her replies are longer than some blogger's actual posts, she makes a valid point each time and she could make reference back to her response and even put in an example. On this page, Rochelle has a very extensive post it it is sectioned off into paragraphs which makes it look neater and each point is on its own so the reader can easily know what she is trying to say. Also, there are many times that she used the FIFA as an example and even though it is the same thing for so many responses, she still finds a way that it would connect to the post. The 2 things that I find Rochelle always has in her posts are detail and support. Again, for example, in her actual post for this page, she wrote her response like she is talking to someone and she gives all the support she needs. In her 7th paragraph, she gave an example of sports teams but adding on she went more in depth and started talking about FIFA. With her support, she always has one paragraph with her opinion and in another paragraph, she will come right back to give examples to support her position. Here, one of her paragraphs is...

And then she comes back with this support...

So, I think that Rochelle is the top blogger in this class.
For example Rochelle gave a quote which said leadership is not an action it is position she also brought up the FIFA World Cup and miss America to support her answers. She also included very high end vocabulary such as choral, publicity, surpassingly and more.
DeleteIn my personal opinion I would say that the 2 bloggers that dominate the blog have to be Rochelle and Tamana I say this because both of these bloggers have extensive answers and add the smallest of the information they can find.
DeleteRochelle - I love Rochelle's real world examples they really relate to her answers. She will look for anything she can find and then use it as something new and in Many ways. She had an example about FIFA and miss America , let's admit it no one would be a deep thinker than her she is using a small example as a huge impact in her response. She is using a model who was made fun of in a text for people in jail camp!
Tamana- tamana takes a while to write her response but when it arrives it wipes everyone away! She uses high end vocabulary and has deep answers. What she writes seems like a lot but when you read it, it makes perfect sense and has great paragraphs.
For my top blogger I would promote Rochelle.
She has awesome world connections, she is always trying to prove her point right this makes it fun on debate with her and is constantly asking questions. But let's not forget that she is engaged in lots of responses. Something I personally find is that she has fun with her writing.

i think X-ray has taken that position and i think because of the position he took , he never lets anyone else put down someone in his group this is why X-ray saved Stanley from fighting with lumps and gave stanley the nick-name cave man .
Just like in sports a leader or your team mates should never allow someone from the other team to make fun of you . Also a leader on a sports team should try to make you surpassingly better and boost you up wether its constructive criticism or a pat on the back they should at least try to make you better and not only you but the team.
Since X-ray is the leader I think he had taken the initiative to give Stanley a nick name . If a new team mate was to come on your team whether its soccer,baseball, basketball , etc. Wouldn't you think the captain would try and make you feel welcome or like you fit in . Because being 13-15 year old I think most of us could say we want to fit in or to feel like we do . As I said before a leader or your team mate should never allow the team to make fun of someone on your team .
X-Ray seems to be leader from the initiative to give nick names and make stanley feel welcome although he barley knows him , and not allowing someone not in his group to start something with someone in his group . X-Ray also seems to have others back with in the group.
I think we could all say X-ray is hands down a leader . But in a way it seems like X-ray needs to be the leader . I feel because he helped Stanley , Stanley sort of owes X-Ray one .
I also look at this situation as a benefit for X-Ray . He helped stanley now stanley should do something for him in the future . Pherhaps X-Ray does this so he could have many help lines at his time at camp green lake ?
This situation almost makes me see X-Ray like a attention needer . He needs to be the one to bring peace , almost like everyone's guru . . He has to be the leader , He has to be the peace maker . Its just a way this situation has made him look in my eyes .

Some bloggers that I feel totally dominate these kinds of task(s) would be Rochelle, Tamana and for a rookie in the blogging experience Hitisha.
DeleteAll 3 of them both provide detailed and lengthy responses. They seem to always be determined to take their stand and convince others along with it. Though it may not work 100% of the time, they certainly try and believe they can. Their writing skills i personally would consider truly outstanding. For Hitisha, it's good to see a 7th grader in a way take their place in this class, especially when there is multiple award winners in 8th grade. It's great to see her both show and take her place.
Though those 3 have phenomenal post, one of them truly stood out to me. She has a very unique and persuasive style of writing. I can truly say she dominates this blog, and her name is Rochelle.
I've seen her work on a lot of blogs being in the same class with her. And I find her ways of writing unique. I mean without her I really don't think anyone would really bring up Miss.America or the FIFA World Cup. Her train of though could sometimes be random but it works. The FIFA cup winner literally was show cased on Sunday and one day later she brings it into class.
I can truly say Rochelle is also very relatable. I mean look at her post for this. She talks about " how in sports teams or in everyday life if you just met someone and they were possibly be pounded you wouldn't help them whether they were a class mate, stranger, or even if your the leader or captain" <her words exactly. Which I'm sure we can all agree on, it's true and once again relatable.
Over all she's a phenomenal writer. Even when I'm just talking to her she goes into these deep train of thoughts sometimes. Her use of quotes are well done. Her writing it's self is well done. This is why I personally say her writing truly dominates,
Rochelle has been all over the blog, in her answer she puts a lot of great examples. For example: when she was proving how nick names give a boost in self Esteem, she used miss America . She has long responses, her responses are longer then some of the posts them selves. Her examples really make her answer clear. She is always starting a strong argument when she dis agree's she backs it up with a lot of information, which makes hard to prove her wrong. For example: this was to Hatisha's statement, Hatisha hadn't said that x-Ray did this to benefit him. She tried to convince her that he did by saying:

She adds great detail to answer, taking every fact in the question and applying it to her answer making it so long and highly organized, with great detail. Like when she looked deeper into x-rays characteristics, and proved to Hatisha that he did it to benefit himself.
Also her responses use examples all the time. And the examples are not general thoughts. They are real examples that happened in the world.

I think the do I acting blogger is Rochelle, because she has long a highly detailed responses she responds to people not only 2 or 3 but she is all over the place some of her responses Are longer than the others whole answer.She gives a lot of good examples and real world connections like the Miss America one and the FIFA World Cup. She has great and strong arguments, she has good paragraphs and great vocabulary like sympathetic, surpassingly and there are a lot more high end word she writes I the raw and she is really competitive and she gives a lot of information and so it's hard to prove her wrong.She doesn't really focus on 3 people instead she responds to almost everyone she is really detailed and proves her point.

Just like in sports a leader or your team mates should never allow someone from the other team to make fun of you . Also a leader on a sports team should try to make you surpassingly better and boost you up wether its constructive criticism or a pat on the back they should at least try to make you better and not only you but the team.

If a new team mate was to come on your team whether its soccer,baseball, basketball , etc. Wouldn't you think the captain would try and make you feel welcome or like you fit in . Because being 13-15 year old I think most of us could say we want to fit in or to feel like we do . Abina is a grade 7 and she is really dominate for someone who hasn't had much of an experience of blogging but she still dominates which stands out ! I often notice her not debating with everyone but engaging with a few so highly !
Abina works out of school hours, and it's really impressing to see that because most kids rather play outside or play mind craft!

Rochelle, Tamana - You only know that X Ray is gaining something out of helping Stanley because you have read the entire book and know the story. But if you were reading this book for the first time you would think that X Ray is helping Stanley out of the kindness of his heart. You might think that he's doing this for a name of being a leader, but you can not think that he is gaining something out of it. Did you think the same way when you first read the book? When reading chapter 9 for the first time, while reading the scene where X Ray helped out Stanley, did a thought just occur in your head saying that X Ray is helping Stanley for having the name of a leader, and for the fact that he will gain something later? Because when I read that chapter for the first time the thought that occurred in my mind was "X Ray is really kind"

Not only did she support her position for strongly but she often leaves questions at the end . This is a way for us to engage back and debate more .
She often has bug responses ! And I don't mean to be rude but often bigger than the grade 8"s with experience . She dominates ! Today I found her debating with me and we went back and forth and it was a good debate ! She supported her position and I supported mine .

Tamana writes with great vocabulary for an example :
Xray is the leader of the D Tent. That would be my best reasoning guess. If X-ray is the leader and every camper in his tent follows his orders, it would be his duty and position to defend and protect his team members from outsiders and other kids from different tents.. Stanley and X-ray don't know each other as of yet. But that's what he was trying to do. He was letting Stanley know that he is part of the D Tent, it was almost like he was introducing himself to Stanley. X-ray was also keeping his reputation and I think that this was exactly what X-ray was looking for. He needed that extra scene where he could save someone and receive that extra umph of glory and respect for his holding position as leader of D Tent.
^ that was a paragraph from one of her response it had good vocab and was articulated very well ! As I look at the blog Tamana isn't in every debate but the ones she's in are very good debates !
Once she was blogging and she past the limit of words ! I think she posted Almost 10 paragraphs ! She writes a ton ! And it's not only today but it's in previous times ! Like last year Tamana was a great blogger ! And I could really see she has grown more and more skill!
Another thing about Yamaha is that she is engaged in every writing from the little details in between the lines ! To me that's what makes a really good blogger . Vocabulary is great and so is articulation but engagement makes you write with passion ! And with passion you write bigger and better and you support your position always for an example :

I disagree Gitie! You just said that you agree that he is leader, but you don't agree that he is using him. You think that he is just trying to "bond" with him ? Being leader is something big and it's not eenie - meanie where someone gets chosen. He has been at CGL the longest out If all D Tent campers. Surly he must know more of how to behave and act around this area. As you said Gitie, x-ray knows his do's and dont's well more Than anyone. Don't you think he will use everyone else to his advantage and say that he is well deserving of it all?
^ Tamara's response wasn't huge ! But it supported her position . She automatically engages into the response , she sakes questions and she is on top in every debate she's in !
She's engaged this is why she post at 11 in the night huge passages ! This is why she debates with great vocal and huge paragraphs ! She is engaged not only today but in every blog in school and out side of school is you take a look at every blog your going to see Tam debating strongly every time ! And she writes a lot every time .
I would say that the blogger that stood out to me the most is ROCHELLE. Though there were many amazing ones I really liked Rochelle's. But the two things that stood out to me the most in her blog were:
Delete1) The quote that she wrote right in the beginning of her blog.
2) And her excellent example at the end of the blog.
As they say," The beginning and the ending have to be the strongest." And I think that her beginning and ending was great. And the middle just flows and connects from the quote to the example.

ReplyDeleteI think she is the top blogger because, as far as I have noticed, whenever she disagrees to responses, she has a strong answer of why. As an example she uses a lot of real world examples such as about miss. America. As well, she uses quotes that support her answer. Almost like examples to support your answer in EQAO. As well her questions.. Are really deep and provides her opinion on the text as well.
She is indeed very good at not changing her opinion and sticks with it no matter how many people might be against it. So my two specific things they do in their responses are questions, that makes the others to deep in the thought of if they are actually correct. The second thing is her sticking to one main theme and opinion. As an example, if you were to look in this blog overall she mostly has examples everywhere, and specifically about the FIFA World Cup. So over all I think she is the top blogger! As well I'd add that Tamana, Gitie and Abina are dominating bloggers as well.
A specific example would be when Abina said she thinks X ray was helping Stanley to help, since it's his first day. Where Rochelle was just stuck to her point, and her response was "

Hatisha you have a great point but you have to look deeper into the character . How does this benefit him? I think we have to realize that in life not everyone is going to be there to help you or because they feel sorry for you
In this world people are going to do things for them self .this world is extremely competitive . If we all wanted the same job we would have to help our selves , and find a way to do that . Soon we will realize that in reality we're going to have to do things to help our selves out . Wether is getting a help line for later .
But this world is not as nice as it seems . Maybe in books but sometimes that's a different reality . This world is full of people who want the same things , this world is full of people who will do anything to help them selves . The world isn't as nice as it seems .

ReplyDeleteFrom looking at the blog and all the replies and counter arguments that are being given, I think that the top bloggers are Rochelle, Tamana, and Mannat. The reason why I have chose these three students as outstanding bloggers is because these three students are constantly replying to others with great supporting details and even real world connections. In every reply they make, great explanation and reasoning is given to help the other bloggers understand what they are trying to point out especially when they have questions and doubts about what others have blogged about. Not only has this made them an outstanding blogger, but also great examples to the class of what great blogging looks like.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I have stated three outstanding bloggers in the paragraph above, I think that the blogger that really stood out was Rochelle. She has been very specific and great in her responses. She has made world connections that support and help a lot with the point she is trying to give out. Examples like The World Cup Winners of 2014 and Miss America are both great real world connections she has provided in her responses to make her stand out. Also, with her opinion and thoughts that over power others, it makes her the outstanding blogger.
We'll I'm thinking Rochelle is one of my top blogger. I chose Rochelle as my top blogger because she put a lot of effort in her writing it not like she's has one paragraph she has more than one. After school she goes on the computer to blog and she makes good points and making it to one huge paragraph. And I like how she uses strong words in her answers. She's very efficient with her work and can get the job done.

In my opinion my top blogger would have to be Tamana because she has really great points I agree with most of them even if I have thoughts different from her responses. Also the fact that she puts a lot of effort and ideas into her post . She also has a lot of questions and replys to others posts very well. She also uses other peoples response and shows her agreements and disagreements. For example she explained that Stanley and X-ray don't really know each other yet. And I agree I mean it would be least likely for them to just become friends like that without even knowing each other. So Tamana would have to be my first but my top three would be tamana, Rochelle, and manat

DeleteThe top blogger I would say would have to be Rochelle even though there are 1 or 2 other bloggers that are amazing as well but Rochelle stood out to me more than any others. Firstly because her main response was outstanding. It had all the elements of a 4++ answer like examples, for example she talked about how a captain makes you feel welcomed and would make you try to fit in and she ties that down to how x ray was trying to make Stanley feel like he is like "family" even though that is not was he is really trying to do. Real world connections for example she connected it to miss America and how she even though she got a lot of hate she became very popular through magazines and interviews. She also used quotes to support her statement like the first thing on her main response was a quote so just before she started the audience knew what she was talking about. In her response there is variety of grammar there isn't only periods periods and periods but question marks, commas and quotation marks. There are paragraphs and high end vocabulary like "Choral".
