Branded Chapter 12

  1. “Think globally, do nothing locally”. Do you think this quote applies to our world or is it just because nothing seems to be in Ian’s favour?

  1. After being introduced to this whole topic of child labor, Ian was brought down to the thought that no matter where or how the uniforms were made, they were coming. after knowing all this, if you were in Ian’s place would you wear the uniforms or still go after what is right?

  1. After completing Branded, what have you learned and what are your final thoughts on the book? Did the ending surprise you? Would you change any part of the book? If, yes, what would it be?

  1. 1. i think this quote applies to our world and seems to be in Ian's favour. Why? because in my opinion this quote " Think globally, do nothing locally" means that we should think not only the rights about our local community, we should think about our whole world too;and that is the truth which we have to know. Also this quote can't be Ian's favour because... well thinking about, it's not only about my opinion it's about everybody's opinion some do have the quote as a favour so that means it could be Ian's favour but my answer is that this quote applies to our world.

  2. 2. If i was in Ian's shoes that moment of the story my decision would be: still keep on going after what is right. Why? because even though i am a person who goes with the flow and think every decision is for our best future but i won't agree at all to wear these uniforms which are against child labour, everybody know that poor children spend all their whole life to make stuff for us and imagine we going to wear uniforms which disrespect children which are forced in child labour. If some of us make a report about someone bullying you and disrespecting you it's the same feeling which would happen to the child labour kids that way what kind of people are we!I we are people who just want stay with rules and don't even do anything if it's against something bad, why are we doing this? why? cuz we are don't care about anything else. Even though Mr.Roberts can't do anything but we kids can do something which would make the school council realise the mistake which they are doing and maybe if they want uniforms they can get from another company brand and save the day! So that's what i would do if i was in Ian's shoes; try to convince the school council, first make a plan than i would do that.

  5. #1: I think this quote applies to our world because, if you think towards the whole world, you can make changes. Not only should we not act locally, but we should do something. Ian, Oswald, and Julia didn't act really local about their uniforms, they acted to change other's minds about uniforms, they acted globally.

    ReplyDelete
  6. 1) I think that this applies to our because this same philosophy applies happens in the real world. In the text Ian said that because he thought it was unfair that even though that they knew about the company that manufacturers the uniforms, they couldn't prevent the school from wearing them. Something similar to this happens in the real world as in school we learn all about child labor and we listen to speeches about them but we take NO action. We know many company that are huge offenders of child labor because we see videos about them but still those companies are running and some of the people that enlighten us about child labor are the ones that wear those brands. Which is why I believe that the quote, "Think globally, do nothing locally," applies to the real world.

  7. 1- I think that the quote applies to the world because in my opinion I think that the quote means do not only thing about yourself but think about others. Another meaning of the quote which I think has a big meaning to it is that think big, not small. These quotes have a lot of meaning to them relating to child labor. As we all know we do not take action in child labor. We all think small. But if we think bigger we could make a change in our world, and that is what really matters. So I think that the quote applies to our world and not to just Ian himself.

    ReplyDelete
  8. 1. I think that this quote applies to the world because the quote defines think big not small. People need to start to think about other people. For example, Child labour is a huge controversial topic, and small changes cant do anything about it, but if we unite and make bigger plans and ideas then we can make a change in child labor. So in any type of matter in the world cannot be changed by doing small thing but they need huge plans and ideas to get a change.

  10. 1) I think that it applies to the world. I think this because today a lot of people only think about making changes in their environment and not making changes in other places. I also think that Mr. Roberts said this to Ian because Ian wanted to make a change in the world and especially for the kids who have to go through child labour every day.

    ReplyDelete
  11. 2) If I was in Ian's place, I would still go after what is right because what is wrong is just wrong. We all know that there is nothing appreciable about the concept of child labor and that it is terrible towards children. Even though the consequences are suspension and then possibly expulsion which would scare all the life out of me and any other person, I would fight. Just like Ian I believe that we all should be doing things for the greater befit of the world such as stopping things such as child labor and human trafficking which is why I, just like him, would go to any extent to go after what is right.

    ReplyDelete
  12. 2- If I was Ian then I would go for what is right. A wrong will always be a wrong. It is terrible that kids have to work in factories in which they get paid so little. So instead of liking the uniform (in which I do not think anyone would) I would try to stop it. Having uniforms is bad in the first place but something more horrible then that would be wearing uniforms made from kids. Making a stop to this and doing the right thing seems to be better than doing nothing about the child labor going on. Stopping child labor comes by rejecting the factory owners. So I would make a stand to stop child labor.

  13. 1. I personally think it applies to our world because millions know about the everyday situations that are a problem to our kind but no one is willing to take action. People say ''Think Before You Act'' but in some situations people just think, they don't act.

    ReplyDelete
  14. 3. my final thoughts about this book is that it was an amazing book to read because in this book it showed me and maybe everyone what to do when something is not social justice. Why does the book show me that? because in this Ian was a person who goes with the flow but when he found out about the logo which was on the uniforms he stepped right in this matter and tried his best to solve this problem and have social justice for the children which are forced to be in child labour. so this was an fantastic book to read since it shows the biggest lesson of our life which we must know, what to do something if this same situation was in front of you! and yeah this is the same thing what i have learned and that was: even id we are people like Ian, but if something is happening which is not social justice we should stand up and go against people who are against something which we shouldn't be at!
Actually the ending of this book didn't really surprised me because i knew that Ian would tell Julia about the situation and both of them would have made a plan and that's what happened! both made a extraordinary plan which succeed and won the war. Also there is no part which i want to change in the story because i like the way hoe the story is, and if i add something into the story then maybe it won't be interesting at all plus i don't have any idea for what to change in the story i like the way it is and i will keep it like that!

  15. 1) “Think globally, do nothing locally”. Do you think this quote applies to our world or is it just because nothing seems to be in Ian’s favor?

I think that this quote applies to our world because changes are always made for the environment and not for other places that really needs help so I think that this is telling you that a lot of people think globally but do nothing locally!

  17. #2: If I was in Ian's place I would still go after what is right. It is not fair and nobel to see these children work really hard and to see ourselves in school. These kids pray to get enough money to go to school, while some of us pray not to go, it does not really seem fair. I understand Ian's point on the social justice and if I were in his place I would stand up for them, even if it means expulsion.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 2. i would go after what is right because it doesn't matter what the situation is you just need to truly believe in yourself and do what is right.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 2. I would just let it go, I would not really care about how uniforms are made because businessman make a lot of money of child labour they pay the workers so little and they earn so much money, that's corruption, i cant do much about it. At he same time the slaves would get little amounts of money but its justified they have nothing else to do and they money they get paid is enough for a living. i agree to that its terrible to work in harsh conditions SO WHAT!!!!! if you don't have money to live then anyone will do anything to live.

    1. Would you REALLY not care about this situation or would you still pay some attention to it? Also, why do you feel that you can't do anything?

    2. Why would you let it go? Just because people are not financially fit doesn't mean that they should be treated this way?

  20. I think that the quote relates to the world because in the book When Ian and Oswald found the logo which is represented by sweatshop where children are making the clothing. Ian thinks that this is unfair because the companies that manufacture the uniforms has not yet been stopped even when people know what is happening. In the real world the same thing is happening when people are knowing the fact they are making the clothing no action is been received in order to stop child labor. For e.g in videos they are showing children are making clothes and no one stopping their poorness. So yes the quote does relate to the world.

  21. 1) I think this quote does apply to our world because we always talk about child labour and other controversial topics but we never do anything about them. We make and listen to all these speeches but we really don't do anything. We talk as if we are going to do something but all we do is talk not actually do. I think this quote makes perfect sense to our world.

  22. 2) After being introduced to this whole topic of child labor, Ian was brought down to the thought that no matter where or how the uniforms were made, they were coming. after knowing all this, if you were in Ian’s place would you wear the uniforms or still go after what is right?

If I was Ian I would go after what is right because that is exactly what Mr. Roberts has been teaching them so it wouldn't be bad if Ian did that because he would be helping people know what is going on, plus this is great start to him being a lawyer!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. 3- What branded taught me was a little more about child labor in which I did not know about. The book taught me what it is like to be a child laborer. My final thoughts on this novel is that it is pretty decent of a novel. Eric Walters did a good job on making the novel a good book. I liked all the details he included and all the real information he added. The ending really surprised me because I did not think that everyone from the student council would be in this. I only thought it would be just the 3. If I were to change something in the story I would change for the fact that there are only 3 main characters. There should be maybe one more female in the act because the only characters it mentioned were boys other than Julia.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 3) After the completion of branded I believe that I have taken in lots of information. This novel taught me to a great extent about child labor which I had not known a lot about, such as the working conditions of the children in child labor and how they are treated. My final thoughts on Branded is that this book is quite an informative and intriguing novel. I enjoyed the way Mr. Eric Walters composed the text in a informative but an interesting and somewhat funny way which would actually make they reader pay more attention to the novel. To say the truth, the ending did surprise me a little as I had not expected Ian to tell Julia and other people about the brand that made the uniforms. Near the end of the story Ian was quite determined to not tell Julia or anybody else except for Oswald about this, but then suddenly when you read the last chapter of the book, you see that Julia and many other students know about this. Well there is nothing in the story I would change because I think whatever the author has written and the way he has written was, according to me, the best way to write this novel, so I would change nothing.

  25. 3. From the book i learned that taking action on whats right is more important than just going with the flow. The book was really good and interesting. The ending did not surprise me because Mr.Roberts knew that Ian was doing the right thing and he did not interfere. Last of all i wouldn't change any part of the book because just one little change can effect the whole story if possible and I personally think that the story is interesting and wouldn't change anything.

  26. 1. I think this quote applies to our world and seems to be in Ian's favour because we should all do the the right thing for everyone. Ian wanted to do the right thing too and he did it for everyone not only himself. Ian had thought about everyone, he knew he wasn't only doing this for himself he was doing it becasue its right and it was going to help everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  27. If I were in Ian's place I personally would go after what is right because those children deserve justice. The companies who are making the children work are stopping them from having a normal life like every other kid and I think every child deserves to have a good childhood so I would stand up for what is right!

  28. #3: I think Branded is an amazing book. It has taught me all about social justice and doing what was right. I would never change this book for the way it is. It has always brought mystery towards me and kept me willing to see what would happen next. If I were to recommend it to someone, I most defiantly would. If you stop reading it, it feels like a cliff hanger and it just ends. Speaking of cliff hangers, the book left me hanging with the kids preforming their deed, and it stopped there. I just wish there was a second part to the book to tell me if their mission was successful or not, and to see what would happen. So, overall I really enjoyed the book and hope that others enjoy it too.

  29. if i were in Ian's place I would what is right because it is not the right thing to treat children like slaves when they should go to school. Instead of going with the uniforms I would go after it make people do the wrong to right instead of keeping the wrong to wrong. i would take a stand and stop the uniforms from being made.

    ReplyDelete
  30. 3) After completing Branded, what have you learned and what are your final thoughts on the book? Did the ending surprise you? Would you change any part of the book? If, yes, what would it be?

What I have learned is to be thankful for everything I have and not throw a fit if my mom gets me something I should just accept it because life is short and not everyone is getting to live it the way they would like to so have fun with yours. If I could change something in the book I would change the fact that Mr. Roberts didn't do anything about the uniforms I would let him help I an, Julia and Oswald help stop the uniforms.

    ReplyDelete
  31. 2. If i were in Ian's place i would still go after what's right because it is right and we shouldn't wear the uniforms the innocent kids made for only 5 cents, and if we wear them if wont be fair and we wont be happy because we know they have been made in sweatshops by little kids and they didn't do anything to deserve it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The ending did surprise me because I thought Mr.Roberts would stick to his word and not get persuaded by Ian and his friends but then again he didn't really get persuaded he just let them do what they wanted too which I didn't think he would let. I wouldn't change any part of the story because I think it is fine the way it is written.

  34. 2) I wouldn't do anything because I don't think it's worth getting in to trouble for. I still don't think that it's right to wear uniforms made by children because they should also be going to school and maybe even wear uniforms too. I would ask Mr. Roberts to at least change the company that makes the uniform to a company that doesn't use child labour. Part of me would want to do something though. That`s because I don`t like labour in any way. I also feel bad wearing my Nikes every day because every time i look at them I get reminded that a kid once held them in their hands and made them for me.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 1. Yes! I believe that this quote does indeed apply to our world mainly because in first world countries we all seem to be wanting to help with poverty and child labour but when we hear about it, we feel the sympathy but do we physically do anything about it? No. How the quote applies to our world is that we all talk the talk but we don’t necessarily do anything thatll help their situations.

  36. 3. From branded i learned that you shouldn't give up on something you believe you can do and you shouldn't let anyone stop you. My final thoughts on the book are that i liked the ending and if i could change any part of the book i wouldn't because it all makes sense. The ending did kind of surprise me because i thought Ian and Julia were the one's who never wanted to get in trouble, but i guess they learned that they have to get in trouble to do the right thing.

  38. I think this book is fabulous and fantastic. The book thought me a lot, I learned that many people have different personalities and opinions that help them different themselves and many friends that are different cant really match others, so then these people always have fights. For example Ian and Julia, Julia wants a lot from Ian and she is very strong brave tempered girl whereas Ian just goes with the flow and does not really care about anything that really happens. This causes fights between different personalities. I would not change any par in the book since it was so good. At the end i would say this one of the best books i have ever read and listened to.

I want to say that I would do what Ian and his class did but in reality I don't think half the people that say that they will protest would actually do it. Parents getting notified about the suspension would be imminent if you were to do it and I have a hard time believing anyone that did do it for the first time would try again. Messing up your record just for uniforms won't be ideal. Not saying that people shouldn't stand up for what you want its just not many people would actually stand up for what they want.

  44. I think this happen in our real life.I am saying this because we only just listen to child labor but we don't take any action about this. So i personally think us individual people have to fight avoid these child abuses. So i think this quote really happen in our real life.

  45. 3) After finishing branded i have learned a lot about child labour including the fact that children only earn pennies even though they work in really harsh conditions. i think that the book was really good and I like how the author gave each character a different personality. Yes the ending surprised me a little because I thought that the author would write about how they protested , and when they would talk to the school board. Yes, i would change the ending because like I said before I would like to know how it went after they protested.

Starting with the ending I would say I wasn't surprised. The ending was more of a cliff hanger, they were just starting to protest as the media had came in and the end was a sudden stop. I would of liked to see more reactions or some details on how many people actually took off their uniforms as the story said it was more than their 23 students from the Social Justice club excluding Mr.Roberts. Also as for changing the story I wouldn't change it as everything is going well as far as we read.

    ReplyDelete
  49. 3. Surprisingly enough, I knew that the ending would be something along these lines due to the books we read during our grade eight year. Both books ended in a way where we were built up to the climax but are left pondering and inferring what happens. I wouldn’t change anything about the story because I think it’s something that leaves you intrigued about what happens and it opens your mind to all the possibilities.
Something I’ve learned from Branded is if I believe something is right I should stick up for what I believe in! I learned that if I want to do something it should be because I want to, not because my friends expect me to join them.

  50. 2} I will say that i will definitely do what Ian did because what Ian did shows that he don't like child labor at all. If it was me i would not even wear the school uniform.I am saying i will not wear because it if you were the school uniforms it means you are supporting the child labor. And it's not fair for a big company Nike using child to work.Or supporting child labor so if i was Ian i would'nt wear uniforms.
