Branded Chapter 1-4

  1. Mr. Roberts is aware that the students are not content with his decision of bringing in uniforms. He is also known to the fact that Julia, is not the type of person who will let him walk over her. Support your response with details from the text.

  2. What character can you relate with the most from Branded? Are you a leader like Julia? Are you the class agitator like Oswald? Or are you like Ian and you just go with the flow?

  3. Would you hang out with someone like Julia at BHJMS? why or why not be specific

I don't think that Mr. Roberts will give the student body a chance to present their opinions given to the fact of how passionate Julia will become, the school will agree with her because they don't want uniforms so the gym would be really loud and chaotic.

    2. You could have explained your answers in more depth by giving more examples of what happened in the book, because I don't quite get why you don;t think that Mr. Roberts wouldn't listen to the students. You also could have added some more opinion to your answer as well. :)

I think that if Julia didn't get a chance she would demand a chance and if he didn't agree to giving her a chance she would probably do something outrageous! I know this because of her character she is the kind of person that doesn't give up without a fight!!!!!

The person I can relate to the most is Ian because he is one of those people who want an opinion but doesn't want to get in trouble for his opinion.

If I was like a character I would be a mix of Julia and Ian because I am a leader and I am a go with the flow kind of person as well so I can relate to both Julia and Ian!!!

  6. 1. I can assume that Mr. Roberts will allow the student body to give their counterpoints but he will still remain loyal to his decision. An example that this takes place, all up until hearing out what the student body has to say, is shown in the text, right after the assembly Mr. Roberts was approached by Julia demanding to have a word with him. In this case it seems that Julia is the representative of the student body. From what we know and heard about Julia, she would take action regardless of whether she had a chance or not. I know this because when they were in the car someone brought up boycotts and Oswald said that they've been there done that. Julia seems like the type to never give up on what she believes in.

But you said she would take action regardless so if she were to do that what if she got suspended? Because in the text Oswald had to take a punishment just for a tiny little thing for not handing his assignment. What if Julia got in trouble?

1- I think that Mr.Roberts would give the student body Julia a chance to argue. In the text after the assembly where the uniforms were introduced Julia came to Mr.Roberts and asked to have a word with him. Mr.Roberts said yes so after hearing that I think that he would give Julia a second chance to argue over the uniforms. Also Julia said if she had a chance or not she would force herself to go and have a talk with Mr.Roberts whether he likes it or not. What Julia would do if she never got a chance is that she will go complain about the uniform regardless if Mr.Roberts wants to or not. As she said in the story she will not give up ever unless he changes the uniform policy.

2- The person who I can relate to the most is Ian because he is the person that just chills out. He does not complain much about other peoples opinions so he is the person who I can relate to the most. Also I am not a leader or a class agitator so I do not think that I am related to Julia or Oswald. I am mostly the kind of go with the flow person.

3- Yes I would hang out with a kind of Julia person at BHJMS because I like people who take initiative for anything they do not like. Julia is also very honest which is a key factor in people which I like. Also I would hang out with a Julia type person because he/she knows how to stand up for him/her self. Another reason why is because she is a person who will never give up.

  8. 1) In my opinion I believe that Mr. Roberts will hear the student opinions and their reasons for fighting against uniform, but his decision will go unchanged. This will probably occur because Mr, Roberts has faith that his decision is the most extraordinary thing that could happen but as a principal he would have to listen to the opinions, but I assume that he won't even care a bit about what they say. An example of what he thinks was shown in the text in chapter 2 and 3 when right after the assembly Julia, a part of the student body asked to talk to Mr.Roberts, without giving much importance he called her to his office. In the office Julia tried to prove her point that this decision was wrong, but he just proved his points and shut her up which left her baffled, which is why I think that Mr.Roberts will do this later in the text to the whole student body.

    2. Yash you have a point with the principal HAVING to listen to the opinions but you are forgetting something. As everyone else complained the principal would have to know that people will still be coming down to the office for complaints. He could easily just ignore everyone since no one else would be coming down unless its for uniforms. Also as you said Julia would not have a chance, Julia could come with a stand and get everyone else to raid him. As shown in chapter 5 she was going to plan to have everyone join in on this. Also you are missing the second part of the question. Will Mr. Roberts give the student body a chance to present their opinions or will he stick to his choice regardless? What would Julia do if she didn't get a chance? The second one.

      Delete
    3. Well the reasonable thing is that Julia won't raid the principal as that would get her in big trouble. About the second part of the question, I forgot so let me answer it now. I think that if Julia didn't get a chance, she might leave the school or get her parents and other important people involved in the issue. She might think that with the support of adults and other important people, she can force Mr. Roberts to create a stoppage on uniforms.

      Delete
    4. I think that u need more examples and ur examples are not really connecting well to ur opinion

      Delete
    5. Yash, judging Julia's personality, she doesn't give up. Plus she hates Mr.Roberts guts. Why would she back down? It doesn't seem like Julia to just given.

      Delete
  9. 2. A character I can relate to is Ian. How? Why? Well certainly because of how reacts to certain things and how he is in general. The way he acknowledges things is assuredly how I react to things at times as well. He doesn't freak out, he doesn't have a reaction filled with hysteria, he acts in an understood manner. I can relate to this, when i'm finding out about something new, i wait till i hear everything and then i can interpret a reaction that is suitable. An example is, when Ian found out about the uniforms he was neutral, he wasn't enraged, but he wasn't overly jubilant. This is the type of reaction I would have. This is an example of how i feel that we are similar. We have comparable reception.

Another way we are complementary is we both seem to be uncomfortable in situations where someone is over controlling. An example of this is, when it was after school and Ian was being driven home by Julia featuring Oswald, Although it wasn't directly said, it was identifiable that he didn't want to be in a situation where Julia wanted to take a stand which would lead to Ian getting involved; then, that could lead to suspension or detention after detention. He didn't want anything to do with what Julia was scheming. He hid behind her seat just to avoid making eye contact through the rear view mirror. How i can relate to this is because when i feel uncomfortable i have a tendency think to myself and stay quiet which was what Ian was doing most of the times. Ian sat himself down in a seat where he dismissed the idea of looking Julia in the eye. That is something i would also do! If i feel too uncomfortable somewhere i'd feel the need to avoid as much human contact as possible. Although it isn't clearly stated, you could apprehend how Ian felt. This is what makes us similar.

  10. I think Mr.Roberts will allow the student body a chance to show their opinion but I don't think that will make him change his mind because Mr.Roberts seems to be a man who follows his word. I think Julia would protest against the uniforms if Mr.Roberts doesn't give student body a chance to speak about the uniforms. In the book Julia says she might arrange a flash mob to try and get Mr.Roberts to change his mind.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Why would he allow the student body to talk when he knows its about uniform. He could backhand her and just tell her to get out before she gets suspended. Of course she would protest about the uniforms because she was trying to do that the whole time. And what if not much people want to join the flash mob?

      Delete
  11. 1) I think that Mr. Roberts will listen to Julia's opinion. On the other hand, I don't think that he will change his mind. If Julia won't be aloud to present her opinion I think she will start coming to school without uniform or start forcing Ian and Oswald to start supporting her. This is what I think will happen because in the book Ian describes Julia as a girl who never gives up and always wants her will.

    2. Why would Mr.Roberts listen to her? How does all of this relate to the text? Why will Ian and Oswald follow her when Oswald is liking the new uniforms? You could have thought this through and you were supposed to relate this to the text...

    3. Why would Mr. Roberts listen to Julia's opinion when she is against him? Why would she only force Ian and Oswald and not the rest of the school?

    4. I think he is right he will listen to Julia and then ignore her, Julia will tell Oswald and Ian to make plans as she depends on them to help her out

  12. 1) In my opinion I think that Mr. Roberts would give a chance to Julia to speak why should uniforms be not used in the school. I say yes because In the book branded it says that Julia would take a stand and also when the uniforms were announced she had wanted a word with Mr. Roberts about the uniforms whether he likes it or not. I think right he would not change his decision so Julia can at least know what are the advantages but later I think that he would give her chance To express her argumets

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Why would Mr.Roberts give her a chance? You only explained what Julia would do. Roberts could easily deny her whole opinion about this. Also do the second part of the question what if Julia never got a chance?

  13. Branded chapter 1-4

    1. I think that Mr. Roberts will let the student body present their opinions and suggestions of the students, but I also think that he will easily counter the students’ opinions with reasons going on the “pro” side of school uniform. I think that will happen because when Julia, the most vocal out of the trio, demanded about the uniform to Mr. Roberts, she too had gotten reasons from Mr. Roberts which she couldn’t defend herself. I think that Mr. Roberts will to the same thing to the student body. The question asks if the Mr. Roberts is going to give a chance to the students to present their opinions or stick to his choice regardless; and I say he will do both- he will listen to the students’ opinions but still stick to his choice regardless. If Julia didn’t get a chance to present her opinions, she would find a way to present her opinions in other forms, such as a protest or campaign, so she can get rid of the upcoming school uniforms. I say this because Julia is the one who is the most vocal and I’m pretty sure she would stand up for herself and all the other students who don’t want school uniform.

    2. I would say that I am a leader like Julia. I say this because if I feel that there is some kind of wrongdoing affecting me or others, I would demand as to why it is happening, and I would try my best to make a change to stop the wrongdoing. Julia had also done that when the news of the uniform had first come out, because she had gone to demand to Mr. Roberts as to why the concept of uniforms had been created. I am also pretty loud and vocal in terms of opinions.

    3. I would hang out with someone like Julia because I know that she would stand up for herself or her friends, like she did with Mr. Roberts, and she has the same attitude toward uniforms like me. She is loud, demanding and brave. He/she also takes part in initiatives, and a lot of students like him/her, so that’s why I would be friends with someone like Julia.

    4. I'm pretty sure that you also know that Mr. Roberts was sure about his choices but he didn't want to appear like he was neglecting the students' opinions, so it wasn't a waste of time (Like he did with Julia and Ian at the office). And, Mr. Roberts already knew the students were angry with this decision but he wouldn't make a difference to the new policy since no one will contradict him with success easily. And, as we read in the book, when Julia and Ian went to the office to discuss the uniform policy with Mr. Roberts, he countered and the students got more concerned but did Ian and Julia get in "deep" trouble? So, I don't think it would be a waste of time for Mr. Roberts to listen about the students opinions, and I don't think the students will get in trouble just for voicing their opinions.

  15. 2) The character I can relate most to from Branded is Julia. Well Julia is the type of student that is a leader and inspiration for all other students, and she is always fighting against what she believes is unfair. For example, in the text, once Mr. Roberts announced uniforms, Julia sprung up from her seat and started pelting Mr. Roberts which questions such as, " Why wasn't the student council consulted about this decision." In many ways I am also like Julia as I take up most of the responsibility of my group during group work and lead them to success. Also I try to be active amongst the school and question decisions, and also I ran in the school election to be elected as the vice president of the school council.

Ian doesn't really like to be in the middle of fights or arguments I'm the same way. He also seems to be really chill and goes to with flow. You could have explained a lot more about the text and how Mr.Robert and Julia would act to this.

  18. 3. Yes i would! I believe that someone who sticks up for what they believe is right is someone you should talk to. Julia is an opinionated person and will take initiative and do what she perceives is right. We know that she'll take a stand and personally i think it's a factor everyone should consider having! Why i would talk to Julia adn be friends with her if she went to the same school is because i know she would be the person who you would find challenging people and who would find the disadvantages and advantages and lay them out. She's an eye opener in a sense; she makes you think about all possible things that can happen. She exhausts all possible results which i think is important because there's always two sides of a story.

  19. I would hangout with someone like Julia because if she puts her mind to something she is determined to get it done and I like that about her. He believes that his decision will bring positive impacts on his students and he is very serious about school uniforms. His decision will remain unchanged because from what I have read and heard I say that Mr.Roberts keeps his word. If Julia does not get a chance to present her opinion she will gather up with her friends and make plans to stop Mr. Roberts. Julia will most likely go protest. Julia will never give up on stopping school uniforms.

    2. Why would Mr.Roberts bother to listen to his students even though he will keep with his own decision? It would be a waste of time for him to even listen to the students. You also need to explain more from the text because the details were pretty weak and you never related this to the text besides for the fact you said you have read the book.

    4. But remember in the book it said that he changed his mind about the dances? They used to be cancelled as long as students are in the school, but the whole school came together and behaved. After Mr.Roberts changed his mind.

    5. 100% Agreed. And how would you know if he changed his mind or not for the uniforms or to listen to others since Mr.Cheney never went to far in the book for us to know that. We are just using our knowledge and memories about the book.

      Delete
    6. He probably did that so students don't protest because either way it is equal it was no dance before with no uniform and it's dances and with uniform

      Delete
    7. Because if students did not have dance and had uniform then they would all be angry and would go on a strike

  22. 1. I think Mr.Roberts will give the student body a chance to present their opinions because he should know how the students feel about wearing uniforms, they feel this way becasue they will be the ones wearing the uniforms that they never wanted to. If Mr.Roberts doesnot let the student body present their opinions then it wont be fair to the students because they never had a chance to say how they feel. Mr.Roberts will not give up on what he wants and in this case he wants to change the clothing and he is, but he is changing it to make it fair for the teachers and the students so the teachers and the students both have to wear uniforms. If julia didn't get a chance she would not wear the uniform to school because she would be forced to wear something she didnt have a chance to fight against. Julia would've done a protest off-school property but in the book it said "we are not wearing uniforms for the protest so why should we protest"!

    2. As said in the text Mr.Roberts is STRONGLY on the side for uniforms. Why would he care about others asking for no uniforms? How will it not be fair? There are many positives for the uniforms but also many negatives. Roberts is going for all of the positives of the uniforms. Also if Mr.Roberts chooses to listen to the students but just says no and keeps to his own decision, it would be fair due to what you are saying. You got a lot off topic around the end there and you should also add more details from the story since I only saw 1 sentence.

  31. 2. I think I am more like Ian because I don't always know what to go with, and I am not a leader or a agitator. I find myself more like Ian also because if I were in the same position I would also be fine with wearing uniforms because they're not that big of a deal and it would be good to feel like I fit in. And if i had an idea i felt good about but then someone said maybe it wont work and i would just say "yeah maybe it doesn't work", so i wouldn't stay with my idea i would just go with the other persons idea.

    1. What if you didn't agree with her plan? Would you still do what she wants or would you tell her you don't feel like it's the right idea?

    1. What if you disagree with her idea? Would you tell her? Or, would you go with the flow and not tell her what you really think like Ian?

  34. 2) A character that I can relate to is Julia and Ian. I can relate to Ian because mostly when something happens i Go with the flow I don't do some useless behavior or go crazy over what happened or what i need. When I go with the flow I usually be calm and not be anxious over things for example like in the text it says that when the uniform came Ian was going with the flow and Julia. When I found out that this school has a uniform I didnt care instead I had continued the uniform.
I have a bit of Julia in me by when in class or home I take initiative while doing independent work and group work . Being a leader is a big responsibility which I have done before.
I would say I am both because as leader I am with the flow too.

  35. #1 Mr.Roberts is defiantly going to listen to his students about the uniforms, however I highly doubt that he would actually do ANYTHING about it. Judging by Mr.Roberts personality, I can see that he does not change his mind unless the students come together to do something about it. An example of that would be the school dances. Mr.Roberts used to cancel the school dances, but after the students started being well behaved, so school dances were brought back. But the whole school did that. It would take a lot to get Mr.Roberts to change his mind. Then there is Julia. She is a leader that never likes to be shut off. If they don't think of a plan soon, uniform will be a part of school. However judging by the way Julia is, she does not seem like she can easily be shut off either. I know Julia will do something big, the question is what? If Julia was shut off, she won't really be able to change anything. Everything would go as Mr.Roberts planed.

    1. Good u used the small details in the book that make ur response very good but I don't agreee with ur opinion because ur response lacks that thing which acctracts people to opinion and makes them agree with it

    3. So you are trying to convince the reader that Julia won't shut off as easily? But you just told the reader that Julia can be shut off. you have to explain these two differences in more depth.:)

    4. DEFINITELY LISTEN! So it is a 100% guarantee? I do not think that he would listen because I mean he is a man of his words so he will probably stick with the uniforms and ignore the people complaining since it would waste time. You could have thought that through. What would all the students coming together do? After the first few sentences you were basically just talking about the book. You did not really talk about the question much and I think you should have added more details from the text to support your opinion. Another thing is as you said Julia could not be easily shut off but she can still be shut off but it would be hard. At the end there too you did not really answer the question or even talk about it. You were asking a question for no complete reason. -.-

  36. 3. I would hang out with Julia, I wil take advantage of her. Julia stands up for her freinds and helps them out so whenever I a in trouble or in the need of help Julia wil support me. She is very brave and when she takes a stand she does not look back, she will do it and she won't give up

  37. #2 I would say I'm more like Julia. I'd have to admit, I can be really bossy and I try to take charge. But, there are times that I am like Ian as well. I may be a leader, but not a leader of everything. It usually depends. If it's leading of math or language, that is my lead. But, if it is sports or something really crazy, I'd take a step back and listen and sometimes follow along. There are times that I won't agree, but mostly I just go with the flow or lead.

  38. 2. I can relate to Ian because most if the time im lazy to do alot of things but it depends on what i have to do. for example if i have to do chores i just need o get the job done of else no tv. Now i bought roller skates earlier ths week and i wanna go learn how to use them because i want to. So for me i just go with the flow depending on whats happening.

  39. 3) Yes I would like too hang out with someone that is like Julia. I would like to because it can help myself be like her. It would help me by when ever I am alone maybe the leadership can help more in being less shy. Being with a kid like that can encourage me to not be alone and be strong> Also I would like to hang out with a person like that because It can not let other people think that I am alone and easy to pick on.

    1. Well you wrote about only the positives and not the negatives, such as, you might get in trouble or it might ruin your reputation.

    2. Well you only did talk about what you would do if you hanged out with someone like Julia but you did not really explain why you would hang out with her. Also you could have added more details to your answer.

  40. Yes and No. Yes because by the Julia acts, it doesn't seem like anyone wants to mess with her or her friends. Also her position in the school as the President of the Student council, which means that if you are her friend you could tell her to suggest things that will change the school. There are also reasons why I would never hang out with her. One of the, is because the book describes her as someone who always likes to boss people around, including her friends. Also she doesn't want to hear about other people's opinions. Those are my reasons that I would and would not hand out with Julia.

    1. You are supposed to only choose one side and do the pros of it. Not both. I liked your opinion but you could have explained some more about the book and Julia itself. You did not really do that all you thought of her was a bossy person.

  41. 3. I would hangout with someone like Julia in BHJMS because it's a good thing that she will fight for what she wants and it's a good thing to see her so focused on her goal and getting other people's support. If i felt like I didn't agree with her I would tell her so she knows there are people who might also disagree with what she wants and she always wants something good but not only for herself she wants something good for everyone! If I could hangout with someone like Julia it would be great because she knows she is not going to let herself or anyone else down.

  42. 3.yes, I would like to hangout with someone like Julia because she's the kind of person that would stand up for her and her friends rights and she seems like the person that would pick a fight for fairness.

  43. #3 If I had the option to hang out with Julia, I would love to hang out with her. Julia's personality contains: she stands up for herself and others, she is a leader, and she is a little talkative. If I were Julia's friend, she would stand up for my opinion and my rights no matter how much trouble it would get her in to. She may take care of her own path as well, but I know I would MOSTLY respect that.
