The Cheat

The Cheat

Hey Team here are two conflicting and opposite opinions about the book the Cheat.

Read the reviews and then write your own mid way review of the book The Cheat (pretend you are writing your review for the school newsletter and you are trying to inform other students in grade 7 and 8 about the book.)

Review 1

This is a middle school book about cheating on a geography midterm. What makes it charming and thought-provoking is the fact that it's told from the points of view of six kids who were involved, with 2 or 3 pages of text at a time told in each kid's distinctive voice. The voices are great: they make the book.

Review 2
This is a book that I picked up as a MS reading teacher. I try to read books to recommend for my students. I would NOT recommend this book. The book focuses on a group of friends who get caught (some not caught) cheating on a midterm. The narration moves from person to person. I felt like there were too many voices--4 main, 2 supporting--for middle school students to follow. Because there were so many voice, the characters, in my opinion, were never really developed at all. I found myself asking, "Wait, is she the one who's dad died? or did he leave her mom? Which one was that again?" I also felt that there was no real resolution to the problem. The book explained what happened, but nothing was really resolved. Overall, a quick read, but not one that I would recommend to my students

  3. The book "The Cheat" is about a group of grade 8 students that cheat on a midterm. Most(but not all) of the students are caught. the parents are called to the school and are told that their kids have cheated on a midterm.
in his book, the 6 students speak in the own perspective, in different chapters. it makes this book different from others.

  4. This book is really intresting to read and fun. I would recommend this book because it gives a good main idea of why we shouldn`t cheat. how it will effect us and our family. how it will trouble make us look bad in front of others. as well around 85% of people will not forget that u have cheated.this is a really good book becausse it is written in different point of views. there are at least 6 different voices which gives a better idea of the book. thought few parts can get confusing in my different people talking, though overall it is a book i would recommend because it will tell the people who think they can get awayy with cheating that they can get in big trouble, while effecting their families.

  5. The Cheat by Amy Goldman Ross is about a bunch of grade 8 kids cheating on their geography mid-terms. I personally enjoy the way the narration switches points of view every chapter. It may be hard to follow at times, but it gives a very nice flow. Almost like a chain reaction from person to person.
Each character has their own voice. Either smug, nervous, afraid, calm and collected, jealous ex-girlfriend/total blonde. The fact that the author was able to integrate all of these voices into the book makes it that much better.

    2. Naw. I actually find it very easy to follow along, probably because it is so random and so am I.
I mean my train of thought is extremely random, so I will think of the weirdest thing at the weirdest time. And I guess the book is like that too.

  6. If you want to read this book you would have to be a very good reader because honestly this book is insanely hard to follow considering the fact that it does not go in chronological order, but that is what also makes this book unique as a narrative. This is a book about 6 students where they cheat on a midterm, not all of them though. This book is a book to read aloud and not in your mind because the way Mr.Cheney reads it makes this book way more interesting than if I were to read this book myself.

    1. I agree, because the way Mr. Cheney reads the book makes it SO much more interesting, rather than reading it myself. Though I like reading by myself, i'd like to listen to read-alouds once in a while, too.
I find following the book not that difficult, only confusing when Mr. Cheney says the name they are transitioning from too quietly, though I would catch up and notice who is talking.

  7. I am sort of neutral for the second review, because, in a way, the reviewer is right. The characters don't develop, since there are a lot of voices that need to be heard. It gets confusing from time to time, however, I disagree with the part in which the reviewer would not recommend this book.
It is easier to point out flaws rather than trying to find praise words, which is why the review at the top has less thoughts and proof about it.
I would recommend this book to other grade 7-8's because of the interesting book's voices and stories. In the negative review, it says nothing gets resolved in the end. I believe that makes it more realistic. Just because it doesn't have a cheesy happy ending, doesn't make it an any less great book, in my opinion, at least. As long as it was a good ending (which I don't know yet(, because after all, a good ending sometimes doesn't mean a happy ending.

    2. I don't agree with you when you said "In the negative review, it says nothing gets resolved in the end. I believe it makes it more realistic." I don't find how nothing getting resolved is realistic. I don't understand that comment.

      Delete
    3. I mean, in life, not everything gets... I don't know, a happy ending? Most cases you do, and if the author would extend the book, I'm sure that there would be a happy ending eventually. And usually, at least something is resolved, not "nothing" as the person said. They are probably over-exaggerating. (but, if in the end, nothing REALLY get resolved, well then, my bad, mister or miss reviewer :P)
In realistic situations, things blow over in a few weeks.

      Delete
    4. I disagree. The negative review went on and on about how confusing the 6 perspectives are and how the story didn't get resolved. Do you think it all doesnt get resolved at the end?

      Delete
    5. we never even got to the end of the book so like none of us (besides the grade 8)
know if the book gets resolved. Probably does not get resolved considering the fact that these people who review these books have already read this book before
either that or somone ripped the last page out of the second reviewers book

      Delete
    6. anything can happen at the end of the story. Who knows??? It could end with Sarah waking up knowing its a dream, etc .... I agree with Muna.

      Delete
    7. Linda, you know how you started off with supporting the fact that the characters don't develop, it could be that they could in the next half and that reader who wrote the review didn't notice it. So would you totally rely on that one review and agree?

      Delete
    8. I don't think nothing will get resolved, what I'm trying to say is.. UGH I CAN'T FIND THE WORDS -.-
      Okie dokie, Let's try again,
I think that things will get resolved, I wrote it here:
"usually, at least something is resolved, not "nothing" as the person said."
I'm trying to say, that it is not uncommon in reality to just have things blow over. I also forgot to say that Amy (the author) probably left a blank space in the end, so that your imagination takes over, and finishes in the end most favourable to the reader in their mind, rather than writing the whole ending, not leaving much space for imagination

    6. I agree with Pooja because the different voices make the book stand out for the rest of the books. the different voices keep the reader engaged since its a different style of writing which we don't see or use in our everyday lives. we mostly read narratives with chapters and paragraphs and its usually in 1st person r 3rd but this book is written by everyone's perspectives.

  10. Overall, reading this book is very creative in a way. In the text, every character has there time to share there part of the story. Everyone's point of view is given in the text through one person to another. This helps me to understand the text more fluently. Unlike other text, this book is not one chapter after another, speaking in third person. The students in this story (Sarah, Jake, Rob, Ruby, Katie,Dan) are the narrators. Also this shows how each character speaks, whether its poetic, slang, choppy sentences, always using "like". To me I would recommend this book to other grade 7 & 8's

The book is really interesting because it has a unique style of writing, in every chapter the perspective changes from either Ruby, Jake, Rob, Sarah, Dan or Katie. Seeing what every character was thinking in the sane experience and time of everybody else made the characters more developed and made the story more interesting than hearing one perspective threw the whole book

  15. The Cheat is a book that's not very large and doesn't take long to read but the text keeps you engaged within. After reaching to the middle of the text, so far 4 students have been caught cheating on their geography midterm. It is a good piece of text though readers have to focus on their reading or else they'd be confused by the different style. The Cheat is a chapter for each character, whenever a new chapter begins, it's a new character's perspective and more than one character gives an opinion on the same thing so while reading you have to keep in mind that some parts you're reading could be the event happening at the same time as another happening at another place. It actually turned out that those who were caught know they've done the wrong thing and they say it's just a little punishment and it'll be over in a while. Recommanding this book would be a good idea in terms of strengthening reading skills and having moral value. Readers could infer that though no one out of who has cheated is ready to accept their misdeed, their own fear could be eating them from the inside. However, at this point, the students who haven't taken it seriously could become a bad influence.

  18. Each book has its differences and similarities, each author has its own way of expressing its feelings and thoughts, each book is written in its own way and each has its own spotlight and this is no exception. This book is from the perspectives of middle school students, a school principal, and a few parents of teenage children. Each chapter is a new characters voice/opinion and that's what makes the book unique. Not many books are written like this that each chapter is a different characters voice and its actually written in the way they speak. The different voices basically make the book complete.

I would recommend this book to other teens because I'm pretty sure all of them can relate to this in some way. It could you yourself being caught cheating, it could be your friends cheating, your class mates cheating, it could be anything. And mostly people can probably relate to one character because their personalities match or they can be a mix of characters. But either way whether it be a connection to the book or a similarity between the personalities each student can probably relate to this book somehow. In a way this book is a teaching everyone else a lesson that cheaters never prosper and how bad cheater can be and how much trouble lying and cheating causes.

If most of this class has a pretty positive opinion about this book I'm pretty sure other students will probably like it also because its a very interesting book and the way the book is written with he voices makes it really enjoyable. I would recommend this book to all the grade.7's and 8's because its actually a pretty god book.

I also like the way each character has their own style of speaking too. This book is a great book but it can be a bit hard to follow at times, because there’s like 6 characters and each of them has their own point of view it can be hard at times to recall whose character is what.it gets challenging to keep up with all the different characteristics of the characters.

  24. This book was great, I like the fact that every chapter it is from a different grade students point of view. In the stories climax you hear just the main character, whoever they blame is guilty, and we tend to agree upon them. But when you hear the reasoning of others we have more perspectives and then we really know who is right, it becomes a court hearing and you’re the judge.
But while you’re reading this book I get confused, whenever the person changes I don’t know if what part there at. But students this book has a great moral. The perspective really helps understanding the story, but then again there are some students who will definitely get. During the book you will ask questions to yourself, was she the…….???? Etc. all the information is scattered everywhere and you don’t know exactly how the story goes, because the storyline is scattered everywhere else.
But after reading it continually you will get used to the writing style and will know how the story. I recommend this book to strong reader.

  25. The Cheat is about a group of Grade 8 students that have(some of them) got caught cheating on a mid-term. The story takes place somewhere in Merica(im guesing)and these students didnt have the intention to cheat at first. It started off with one boy that had stole his sisters old exam papers, that boy is Jake. Jake gave Sara the paper but Sara passed it out to everyone, so who fault is it? But yea i would recommend this book especially if your that type of reader that likes every characters perspective ,Alittle mystery, Drama and suspense around every corner, aleast the way Mr.Cheney read it. The book is good and i hope the ending is good too.

  26. Amy Goldman Ross is an excellent author, having written "The Cheat".
The Cheat is a wonderful book, in which the author lets her character's personalities shine through her writing. She created a a back story, a personality, and a voice for each distinct character. If you'd like to know more, here's what it's about!
Told in the POV's of 6 different students, this story is about a group of 4 kids who decide to cheat on their midterm. Few who go through with it get caught, and sent down Punishment Road.
Blame is thrown back and forth, while relationships may or may not be broken. Although it may be hard to read, I would recommend this book to Grade 7-8's, because this book is very suspenseful and interesting, very dramatic also, and it would probably teach you a good lesson from time to time about cheating, and not one that you could just brush away.
"The Cheat" Is a book that'll stick in my mind for a VERY long time!

  27. I have read the book The Cheat. Its about 6 kid getting caught for cheating on geography test well some them are not caught yet may be they will or they will will not. It book is based on six kid and their feelings and thoughts. How are you going to feel after cheating and getting caught on your test. IF you are like Rob you will scared. If you are like Dan you will feel like you even don't care about getting caught on your mid term exam.I would say that you should read this book.

  28. This book is unique. it is different from all others. that's what makes this book even interesting. I still don't get how people would think this book is confusing. The way Mr. Cheney reads it doesn't make it like that.
